Blue
The cord still needs cutting. The linen is soaked. The fire has burned to embers. Constance sits on the floor of the back room with her mother asleep on the bed above her and her sister in her arms and her hands covered in blood that has dried into the creases of her palms. The baby's eyes are open. They are blue — a pale, clear blue that Constance does not yet know will stay. She knows only that they are looking at her, and that her hands are the first hands this person has known.
