Borrowed Faces, Broken Trails

Beatrix Cramer survives on invention—faces borrowed, trails broken, truths bent just enough to pass. Between two worlds, she hides behind names that aren’t hers and choices that cut too close. Adolfo James Forte

Adolfo James Forte (b. 17 March 1998, Bristol) was a Bristol-born track layer, the son of an electrician and a nurse, who answered a cryptic advertisement for 'frontier infrastructure specialists' and, bound by confidentiality, was taken through the Portal into Clivilius in 2019. There he helped build the CGRN Bixbus–Brierly Line, the first railway of a hidden world, and went on to lay track across its growing frontier. His family, told only that he was on a classified mining project, never learned where he had truly gone.

Grace Eleanor Jennings (née Levis)

Grace Eleanor Jennings, née Levis (1970–1993), was a Welsh care worker brought to Belkeep in 1990 by the Guardian Sylvie Sprake, one of a handful of displaced people offered a way out through the Portal. Quiet and watchful rather than commanding, she became one of the raw settlement's steadying presences and married the Guardian Cody Jennings in 1991. She died the morning after giving birth to their twins, Freya and Fryar, in July 1993, having lived just long enough to give the settlement its next generation.

Julia Anastasia Novak

Julia Novak represents the precarious edge where passionate art appreciation transforms into consuming obsession, a woman whose inheritance-funded devotion to contemporary sculpture has led her from Melbourne's gallery openings to a murder investigation in the Australian outback. Born into professional privilege in 1993, she has spent three decades attempting to reconcile her artistic soul with her family's pragmatic expectations, ultimately finding dangerous freedom in financial independence and fatal attraction in the work of sculptor Teppo Jaskalainen.

Emma Jane Whitmore (née Clark)

Emma Jane Whitmore (née Clark) (1780–1851) was a Shepton Mallet blacksmith's daughter whose practical genius helped build Brierly. Meeting the vintner George Whitmore over a stall of pruning tools, she married above her station and carried a craftsman's knowledge of metal across worlds, keeping the settlement's irreplaceable tools alive, teaching its children, and turning rough structures into homes. Mother of John and Henry, she steadied George's restless invention for fifty-one years, outlived him by eleven months, and died planning a spring planting she would not see.
